What Our Families Say

From parents whose children found their pace in a group, and students who are glad they did.

"My daughter Krishna joined Sterling in Year 7 when she was working at a Grade 4 in English. She is now at a Grade 7, and we've seen a big difference in the way she approaches her work. Her writing has improved so much and she is much better at understanding what exam questions are asking."

"My daughter Meera started Sterling at a Grade 5 in Maths and has now moved up to a Grade 8. She is much calmer under pressure and knows how to tackle problems without immediately getting stuck. It's been brilliant to see."

Sunita review
SunitaParent of a Year 11 student
★★★★★

"I moved to the UK and was really struggling to keep up in science. My predicted grade was a 5 in Year 9. By the end of Year 10, I had an 8. The monthly tests kept me on track and the tutors actually noticed when I was falling behind."

Why Small-Group Tuition Makes a Difference

Our group tuition sessions are designed to provide the perfect balance of personalised support, collaboration, and independent learning.

💰

Excellent value for money

Group tuition offers high-quality teaching at a more affordable price than one-to-one lessons, making it an excellent long-term investment in your child's education, without compromising on the quality of teaching, curriculum design or tutor attention at all.

🙋

Learn from each other's questions

Often, one student asks the very question another student was wondering about but didn't feel confident enough to ask. This creates a richer learning environment where everyone benefits from shared discussions and explanations.

🎯

Carefully matched groups

Students are placed in small groups with others of a similar age, ability, and academic level. This ensures lessons are appropriately paced and every student feels comfortable participating, asking questions and building real confidence alongside their peers.

📊

Regular assessment and progress tracking

We assess students every month to monitor their progress. If a student would benefit from moving to a different group, we make those adjustments to ensure they continue to be challenged and supported at the right level.

👥

Small class sizes

Our groups are intentionally kept small, allowing every student to receive individual attention while still benefiting from the collaborative nature of small group learning, discussion and peer support throughout every single tuition session they attend each week.

🧠

Encourages independent learning

Rather than relying on a spoon-fed approach, our lessons encourage students to think critically, solve problems independently, and develop the confidence to tackle questions on their own. These are essential skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

How Online Group Tuition Works

From your first assessment to ongoing progress tracking, a clear, data-led process.

1

Free Assessment

Your child takes a diagnostic assessment covering the relevant GCSE topics. We produce a detailed PDF report pinpointing strengths, gaps and their current working level. Completely free, no obligation.

2

Personalised Placement

Assessment data determines the right ability-matched group for your child, not just their year group. No guesswork, real data drives every placement decision.

3

Free Trial Class

Your child joins their group for a free trial class, structured around the exam syllabus with worked examples and real-time Q&A, with no obligation to continue if it isn't the right fit.

4

Monthly Progress Testing

Every month, your child sits a progress test. Results are shared directly with you via WhatsApp and through the Sterling Parent App, and group placement adjusts as performance evolves.

5

Targeted Intervention

When scores dip, we step in fast. Free 1-to-1 intervention closes specific gaps immediately, at no extra cost.

Meet Our Group Tuition Tutors

Subject expertise and classroom management are different skills. Group tutors need both, and the whole programme is overseen by our founders directly.

Parth holds a Neuroscience PhD from UCL and an MSc from Imperial College London, with research experience at the Francis Crick Institute. His background is in the science of how the brain learns, retains and recalls information under pressure.

Why this matters for your child: Parth built the group-class model itself — ability-matched placement and monthly testing exist because of how memory and retrieval actually work, not as a marketing feature.

Igors holds a PhD in Genetics from the University of Surrey and works as a Specialist Scientist at UCL. He leads the design of every group class's lesson content, translating AQA, Edexcel and OCR mark schemes into structured, teachable sessions.

Why this matters for your child: Igors writes every worksheet, test and lesson plan in-house, so group sessions are tuned to exactly what examiners reward — not generic bought-in materials.

GCSE Exam Boards We Teach

Group classes across Maths, English and Science are built around all three major GCSE exam boards.

AQA exam board
AQA

The most widely used GCSE board in England. Structured papers across all three subjects, closely mapped in every group's monthly testing.

Edexcel exam board
Edexcel

Emphasises comparative analysis and applied, exam-style questioning — built directly into group session practice.

OCR exam board
OCR

Places strong emphasis on structured, extended responses, which group classes practise weekly under light time pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions parents ask most about affordable tuition and group classes.

What actually happens in a Sterling Study group class?+
Each live online class runs with a maximum of 6 students, matched by ability, led by a specialist tutor and structured around the exam syllabus with worked examples, exam-style questions and real-time Q&A. Every topic is taught using our Read, Note, Recap method, so it gets revisited rather than covered once and forgotten.
How much cheaper is group tuition than a private tutor?+
Group tuition starts from £9 an hour, roughly a third of the £25 an hour typical UK rate for private 1-to-1 tuition. You get the same PhD-designed curriculum, monthly progress tests and exam-board alignment, just split across a small ability-matched group instead of one-to-one.
Will my child get lost in a group, or actually be seen?+
Groups are capped at 6 students precisely so tutors can hear every question and notice when someone's stuck. On top of that, a monthly progress test flags any dip in performance immediately, and students who fall behind get free 1-to-1 catch-up sessions until they're back on track.
How do you decide which group my child joins?+
Every student sits a free diagnostic assessment before starting, and the result, not their age or school year, decides which ability-matched group they join. We produce a detailed PDF report showing exactly where they're strong and where the gaps are, and placement is reviewed after every monthly test.
What if my child is already behind in a subject?+
That's exactly what the free assessment is for. It maps out precisely where the gaps are so your child starts in the right group from day one, rather than being placed by age and left to catch up on their own.
Which exam boards does Sterling Study teach, and from what age?+
GCSE Maths, English and Science are taught to AQA, Edexcel and OCR specifications for Years 9 to 11. We also run group tuition for 11+ entrance prep (Years 4 to 6), KS2 SATs (Years 3 to 6) and KS3 (Years 7 to 9), all led by the same PhD-overseen team.
Can we try it out before paying anything?+
Yes. Every student gets a free diagnostic assessment and a free trial class with no obligation to continue. Most parents use it to judge the teaching quality and group fit before committing to anything.
Are we locked into a contract once we sign up?+
No. There are no fixed-term contracts on group or 1-to-1 tuition. Families stay because of results, not paperwork, and you can pause or cancel with a week's notice.
Can we mix group classes with 1-to-1 sessions?+
Yes, and a lot of families do. Group classes cover the regular curriculum affordably, and 1-to-1 sessions are booked on top when a student needs focused help closing one specific gap or pushing for a top grade.
How will I actually know how my child is doing?+
You'll get a detailed report after every monthly progress test, sent straight to you via WhatsApp and through the Sterling Parent App, so you're never waiting on a parents' evening to find out how things are going.
